Unser Profil

RWTH Aachen University is one of the leading technical universities in Europe and offers an excellent research environment. At the teaching and research area Geophysical Imaging and Monitoring under the direction of Prof Florian M. Wagner, we are looking for a dedicated Ph D student to join our team as soon as possible.

We deal with the development and application of multi-physical methods for subsurface imaging and process monitoring. This includes the integration of various geophysical and non-geophysical measurement methods, rock physics relationships and numerical process simulations.

The methodological developments are used in many environmentally relevant applications.

In teaching, we participate in the B.Sc./M.Sc. programs "Applied Geosciences" and "Georesource Management" of the Department of Geosciences and Geography ( www.fgeo.rwth-aachen.de ) and in the international joint M.Sc. program "Applied Geophysics", which is offered together with TU Delft and ETH Zurich ( www.idealeague.org/geophysics ).

Further information on our research and teaching activities can be found on our website: www.gim.rwth-aachen.de .

Ihr Profil
  • Completed university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in geophysics, physics, geosciences or a related field
  • Sound knowledge of applied geophysical measurement methods such as reflection seismics and ERT
  • In-depth programming skills (e.g. in Python), initial experience with version control and ideally willingness to participate in geophysical open-source software development ( www.pygimli.org )
  • Very good written and spoken English; knowledge of German is an advantage
  • High motivation, ability to work independently and in a team.
Ihre Aufgaben
  • Collaboration in the "ET-Plan" research project, which deals with the detailed characterization of the subsurface for the construction of the Einstein Telescope. The aim is to minimize the planning risk with the help of geological and geophysical investigations.
  • Carrying out geophysical field experiments, in particular reflection seismics and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), to characterize the subsurface.
  • Developing and applying models and methods for joint inversion and interpretation using Python.
  • Cooperation with project partners in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.
  • Support in teaching, especially in the supervision of exercises and practical courses, as well as in the preparation and implementation of lectures.
