Research Associate for the project „Magnetic sensing by UV‐absorbing opsins” § 28 Subsection 3 Hmb HG

Institution Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences, Department of Physics, 1st Institute for Theoretical Physics
Salary level EGR. 13 TV-L
Start date01.01.2025, fixed until 31.12.2026 (This is a fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act [Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, Wiss Zeit VG]).
Application deadline01.11.2024
Scope of workfull-time position suitable for part-time

Your responsibilities

Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.
A postdoctoral position is immediately available to work in our group at European XFEL and the University of Hamburg. The post will involve using femtosecond optical and X-ray spectroscopy to study biological dynamics in opsins.
The project will require using lab-based ultrafast optical spectroscopies as well as synchrotron and X-ray free electron lasers to study a variety of opsins, including protonated and deprotonated Schiff bases. Previous experience of femtosecond optical spectroscopy and instrumentation is essential, and a strong background in data analysis and coding will be considered favourably.

Knowledge of x-ray spectroscopy is considered an asset. Enthusiasm and willingness to learn is key and the candidate will have the opportunity to design own femtosecond laser experiments in the home laser lab, but also participate in time-resolved x-ray campaigns at synchrotron and free electron laser sources.

The candidate works with samples from our synthesis collaborators at DESY/Hamburg and Haifa/Israel.

Strong interaction with groups working in theoretical physics is mandatory.

Your profile
A university degree in a relevant subject plus doctorate.
We are looking for a highly motivated and pro-active candidate with a Ph.D. in physics or chemistry and research experience in ultrafast spectroscopy. This position is especially suitable for a candidate with a strong interest in method development and interdisciplinary research at the intersection between physics and photobiology.

Our research is highly collaborative, so we strive for an inclusive, supportive, and enthusiastic work environment that values a team with diverse interests and personal backgrounds. For this position, skills and experience in the following areas are especially valuable assets: Hands-on experience in constructing and maintaining ultrafast laser spectroscopy set-ups, hardware control via Python, Lab View, Matlab, or similar data analysis with common programming languages such as Matlab or Python, proven research experience in photobiology, photochemistry and/or -physics, molecular dynamics and time-resolved x-ray spectroscopy and/or x-ray diffraction, scientific writing, research project management and student supervision.

We offer
