In optogenetics, photoreceptor proteins are employed to manipulate cell-type specific behavior within complex biological networks and intact organs. Switchable rhodopsins represent a novel class of optogenetic tools with the potential to reversible activate G-protein-mediated signaling.In this project, we aim to use switchable rhodopsins for dissecting how G-protein coupled receptors and their downstream signaling pathways affect the electromechanical function of cardiomyocytes.

Research will cover:
- identification and characterization of light-activated G-protein coupled receptors
- optogenetic assessment of G-protein signaling in cardiomyocytes
- biophysical effects of optogenetic manipulation on cardiomyocyte and heart function
- Main techniques involved: optogenetics, single-cell and whole-heart electrophysiology and mechanics, pharmacology, fluorescent imaging, molecular biology
Qualifications and Requirements:
- self-motivated students who hold an excellent (top 10%) MSc or equivalent in Biology or in disciplines relevant to biomedical research such as Biophysics and Physiology
- research experience in molecular biology, cell culture, and in electrophysiology is required
- a solid background in biophysics, physiology and optical methods is compulsory
- scientific curiosity and the desire to actively shape your own research project are a must
- excellent communication skills in English
The Optogenetics Section of the IEKM offers a 3-year Ph D position.
