apartmentHelmholtz-Zentrum Potsdam - Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum GFZ placePotsdam calendar_month

The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for research into the geosphere. With around 1,650 employees, we develop a sound understanding of systems and processes of the solid Earth as well as strategies and options for action to counter global change, understand natural hazards and sustainably secure energy and raw material requirements.

The Earth -Atmosphere Interactions Group of section 1.4 "Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics offers a positon for a: Postdoctoral Researcher (f_m_x) in Micrometeorology

Reference Number 9901

The researcher will be employed for the recently fundet within the recently funded Mo Re Nat-Q project (Monitoring, Quantification and Optimisation of peatland renaturalisation activities through land- and drone-based greenhouse gas (GHG) laser sensors and modelling).
Mo Re Nat-Q is a collaborative project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for the duration of three years, involving partners in industry and academia. The main goal of the project is to develop a mobile, lightweight sensor to measure GHG concentrations for high resolution, spatially resolved GHG emission estimates of restored peatlands.

Our task is to develop techniques to estimate emissions from GHG concentration measurements and to apply these techniques in the field.

You will lead the development of techniques to detect emissions from atmospheric concentration measurements and you will lead and conduct field trials in peatlands in Germany. All sites feature existing ground-based eddy covariance flux towers for GHG flux measurements.

We seek an experienced and independent scientist willing and able to take responsibility for the project. The successful applicant should have micrometeorological experience, a track-record in land-atmosphere flux or GHG concentration measurements, flux data post-processing and analysis, and an interest in new sensor developments.

Your responsibilities:

  • Overall management of the project and communication with project collaborators
  • Development of techniques to deploy the newly developed GHG sensor for flux estimates
  • Leading field campaigns at established peatland sites to test developed flux estimation techniques
  • Post-processing, QA/QC, quantitative analysis and publication of field campaign data

Your qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in atmospheric/environmental science, meteorology, physics, geoecology, or related field
  • In-depth knowledge of micrometeorological measurements
  • Excellent coding and quantitative analytical skills, preferably in R, Matlab, or Python
  • Creative & critical thinking and ability to publish shown by a track record of original and innovative research
  • Strong motivation and excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and in an integrated team environment
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken), German an advantage
