Airbus Defence and Space is looking for a
Masterand in the field of Assessment of Web Assembly/ Clang w.r.t. Airworthiness Certification (d/f/m)

• Start: As soon as possible
• Duration: 6 months
Airbus Defence and Space is developing embedded real-time software for military aircraft. The domain is therefore set to safety or mission critical products. The development shall fulfil considerations of certification aspects as per RTCA DO-178C and its supplements.
Furthermore, the product is to be certified according to DO-297, covering Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) Development, DO-326A, covering Airworthiness Security Process Specification and DO-356A, covering Airworthiness Security Methods and Considerations.
Today, virtualization technologies are utilized in several domains as they bring diverse benefits such as the principle of loose coupling. This enables faster deployment and less integration effort but also the important advantage of controlled resource allocation and management.
However, today’s avionics software is mainly designed in a monolithic way. This does not allow the fine-grained adaption of software according to volatile operational requirements. Therefore, it is required to segment the software into services.

Your tasks and responsibilities
• Design the generic SW architecture for typical services in Avionics
• Assess the fulfilment of airworthiness certification objectives of the designed architecture
• Recommend practices towards fulfilment of the objectives, e.g., propose amendments of the architecture
• Redesign one given avionics application for SOA
The Thesis shall address the following research questions
• How can the avionics software be decomposed into services?
• Which additional mechanisms shall be introduced to the architecture in order to fulfil the certification objectives?
• Which architecture elements have to be part of a proof of concept?
Desired skills and qualifications
• Enrolled full-time student (d/f/m) in in the field of computer science, mathematics or related areas
• Good programming skills
• UML, SysML (an advantage)
• Knowledge in virtualization technologies
• Knowledge of functionality and architecture of embedded systems (an advantage)
• Knowledge in modelling methods and tools (an advantage)
