Scientific activities/projects Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure.

Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place! For our Institute of Maritime Energy Systems in Kiel we are looking for an Engineer electrical engineering, energy technology, mechanical engineering or similar (f/m/x) Research and experimental testing of high-voltage battery systems for maritime applications What to expect: Join Us in Shaping a Sustainable Future in Maritime Energy!

Are you passionate about contributing to a sustainable and eco-friendly energy supply in shipping? Do you have a keen interest in renewable energies? If so, become part of our dynamic international team and make your mark on the energy transition in Germany and beyond!
The Institute for Maritime Energy Systems is at the forefront of researching and developing innovative solutions for the decarbonization and emission reduction of shipping. In collaboration with industry partners, we turn these groundbreaking ideas into practical applications.
We are building a large-scale infrastructure to test newly developed energy systems in standardized laboratory environments and real-world conditions aboard a research vessel. The Department of Energy Converters and Systems (EKS) is pioneering novel concepts for the efficient generation, distribution, storage and utilization of electrical, thermal and mechanical energy from fuels and renewable sources for mobility on water.

Your role: As a researcher you will lead experimental investigations to validate the performance, safety, and efficiency of battery systems in real operational settings, especially aboard our future DLR research vessel. This research will adhere to strict international regulations and safety standards, contributing to the implementation and scaling of emission-free ship propulsion systems, which you will showcase through publications and presentations at national and international conferences.

Key responsibilities: Design, develop, and implement measurement methods and systems for experimental research on battery systems. Utilize models and simulations for system design and performance prediction. Conduct laboratory experiments to assess the performance, safety and efficiency of battery systems under controlled conditions.
Perform field tests under real maritime conditions on our research vessel and evaluate the results. Analyze, document and leverage findings from your work. Present scientific results at national and international conferences, workshops and expert panels.
Opportunity to pursue a PhD or postdoctoral research/habilitation alongside your role. We offer you: Flexible working hours and the option for remote work. Family-friendly workplace environment. Comprehensive training and development opportunities.
Support for pursuing a doctorate and habilitation. What we expect from you: Completed scientific university degree (Diploma/Master) in engineering, preferably in electrical engineering, energy technology, mechanical engineering or related fields.
Knowledge of battery system technology, particularly high-voltage batteries. Initial professional experience in experimental electrical systems, ideally with a focus on maritime applications. Familiarity with international regulations and safety standards for electrical energy systems in shipping (e.g., IMO regulations, classification societies, ports).
Proficiency in modeling and simulating electrical energy systems. Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken. If not fluent in German, willingness to learn German to a professional level What we offer: DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people.
We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular.
