Fully Funded Ph D position in cardiac electrophysiology (m/f/d)
The Institute of Experimental Cardiovascular Medicine (IEKM) is a modern, internationally organised research institute with flat hierarchies and currently around 40 employees and students.Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a highly prevalent cardiac arrhythmia, affecting 59 million people globally. Current medications are largely ineffective in stopping AF. This project seeks to develop and validate a novel model for studying AF and to identify new drugs with the potential to successfully halt the arrhythmia.

Research will cover:
- optimisation of an atrial slice model for acute electrophysiological and mechanical measurements as a novel platform to study atrial tissues and AF
- validation of the model by assessing the preservation of key physiological responses and effects of well-known drugs altering action potential duration
- test of a selection of novel pharmacological compounds in collaboration with Novartis to fight AF Main techniques involved: live tissue slices, the sharp electrode technique and 3D imaging
Qualifications and Requirements:
- self-motivated students who hold an excellent (top 10%) MSc or equivalent in Biology or in disciplines relevant to biomedical research such as Biophysics and Physiology
- research experience in cell/ tissue culture and in electrophysiology is strongly recommended
- a solid background in electrophysiology is highly desired
- scientific curiosity and the desire to actively shape your own research project are a must
- excellent communication skills in English (B2 or higher)
