- PS 2024/18 The group Operando Interfacial Photochemistry in the department PS-ADLU is offering a PhD position to perform soft-X-ray (resonant) photoelectron spectroscopy measurements on liquids and solid-liquid interfaces with the experimental setup SOL³PES at the BESSY II synchrotron radiation facility in Berlin, Germany. The SOL³PES (Solid, Solution, Solar – PhotoElectron Spectroscopy) is a (near)-ambient pressure soft X-ray photoelectron experimental station offering a wide-range of techniques: liquid-microjets, flat-jets, cryo-jets, condensed liquid films at elevated pressures, transmission cells, as well as micro-(photo)electrochemical flow cells (µ-PECs). You will work collaboratively in the framework of the ERC Consolidator Grant project WATER-X and focus on electronic-structure investigations of synthesized and characterized aqueous metal-oxide nanoparticle systems relevant for water-splitting applications, especially on the interaction of (dissociated) water with the nanoparticle surface. To this end, you will primarily study non-radiative relaxation processes, as well as induced electron and charge transfer processes at the nanoparticle – water interface using Augerelectron and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy, and partial electron yield X-ray absorption spectroscopy.
- Active participation in beamtimes at the BESSY II synchrotron radiation facility, especially performing (resonant) soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic experiments of metal-oxide nanoparticle suspensions using the liquid microjet technique
- Performing nanoparticle synthesis and characterize the nanoparticle’s physicochemical properties
- Writing beamtime proposals, reports and feedback
- Analyzing the measured photoelectron spectroscopic data (preferably with the IGOR Pro 9 software and self-written procedures therein), writing scientific publications, and presenting the results at international conferences and workshops Your Profile
- Master (or equivalent) degree in physics, chemistry or material science
- Hands-on experience in photoelectron spectroscopy, nanoparticle synthesis, nanoparticle characterization, (photo)electrochemistry, and/or solid-state physics is very much appreciated
- Experience in programming commendable
- Enthusiasm, experimental skills, the ability to work in an interdisciplinary and international team and a high level of self-reliance are a must
- Excellent written and spoken English skills, additional German skills are advantageous Your Benefits at HZB
- The opportunity to contribute together with researchers from all around the world to the development of renewable energies, energy storage and next-gen technologies for a climate-friendly future
- Good work-life balance through flextime and mobile working after prior agreement
- Counselling services on family and career
- 39-hour week
- 30 days paid leave
- Salary according to TVöD Bund (E13, 75 %)
- Extensive additional benefits, such as company pension plan (VBL), subsidy for public transport (Deutschlandticket Job) and company sports programs
- Career-enhancing networking opportunities and individual mentoring, as well as support through the HZB Graduate Centre
- And a team that looks forward to meeting you!
The salary is based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD-Bund).
How to apply We ask you to please enclose the following documents with your application:- Motivation letter that includes your research interests and explains why you are applying for this position (max one page)
- Curriculum vitae with the stages of your career, publications, research experience and the contact details of at least two scientific references
- Certificates and grades We look forward to receiving your application via our application management system by23.02.2025.
