The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is a non-profit, Intergovernmental Organisation funded by 29 member states and 1 associate member state. EMBL has around 1,900 members of personnel from over 80 nations based across its six sites: the headquarters in Heidelberg (Germany), the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) in Hinxton near Cambridge (UK), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Rome (Italy) and Barcelona (Spain).

As an internal consultant on all EDI matters, you will partner with various teams to drive professional development initiatives that align with the organization's strategic goals.

As a dedicated EDI Partner, you will be responsible for the positive development of our existing EDI framework within EMBL, taking our agenda for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion to the next level. You will be part of the People Team and will contribute to the implementation of a holistic approach to EDI truly integrated into people practices and organizational outcomes so the sustainable benefits of a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace can be experienced both internally and externally.

With a passion for championing equality, diversity and inclusion, the EDI Partner will work across all parts of the organization and partner with all leaders and staff to enable the implementation of EMBL’s EDI Strategy and ambitions to contribute to spearheading our journey toward a more inclusive and diverse workplace.

Your role

Taking an informed and proactive approach to embedding policies and practices that will improve EDI across each of EMBL’s sites, you will contribute to the delivery of defined EDI projects, to further developments in the EMBL EDI strategy plans working in close collaboration with EMBL’s EDI governing body, and to focused communication to raise awareness of EDI efforts and celebration of diversity achievements throughout the organization, instigating a transformative shift in our culture.

In the role of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Partner who is part of the EDI Office, you will collaborate to implement and execute strategies, programs, and initiatives designed to cultivate an environment where every employee is empowered to contribute their unique viewpoints and life experiences.

By networking outside of EMBL, representing the organization at meetings, conferences and events to understand best practice in the area of equality and diversity, you will be well positioned to bring this back into EMBL.

No one day is the same and there is always something different happening but in particular, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive EDI programs, initiatives, and action plans that align with our company’s values and business goals.
  • Collaborate with HR, leadership, and various teams to integrate EDI principles into talent acquisition, hiring, onboarding, training, and professional development processes.
  • Establish and maintain metrics to measure the effectiveness of EDI programs and initiatives, regularly assessing progress and making data-driven recommendations for improvement.
  • Design and conduct training and workshops to raise awareness and enhance understanding of EDI issues, fostering a more inclusive and culturally competent workforce.
  • Provide guidance and support to employee resource groups and networks, encouraging their active participation in promoting diversity and inclusion within the EMBL.
  • Act as a liaison with external organizations and communities to enhance partnerships and drive meaningful EDI initiatives in our broader community.

  • You have demonstrated experience in implementing an EDI action plan to diverse, dispersed and dynamic teams, in navigating conflict and facilitating conversations.
  • You thrive when you can contribute creative resolutions to a diverse range of problems whilst keeping the best interest of the organization in mind when seeking solutions.
You might also have
  • Prior experience in delivering an organization’s EDI strategy and providing expert guidance in EDI
  • Exposure to and work experience in a matrix structure/ multicultural environment, ideally in a science organization
  • Good knowledge of another European (such as French, German, Italian or Spanish) language

Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed up to a total of nine years, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
