Then this is your place! Reference Number: 101169042 Fully funded PhD project under Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Networks "FOCAL": Space/aerial node design for dual functionality of QKD and high data-rate FSO communications (f/m/x) What to expect: Research on the current status of space/aerial networks for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Free-Space Optical (FSO) data transmission Literature research, preparation, and evaluation of classical laser communication and quantum communication solutions Conceptual design of a mobile node for FSO data transmission and QKD, initially generically for aerospace communication networks and later for the development of a detailed concept of a satellite network Investigation of trade-offs in integrating QKD and classical FSO communication in a single node, e.g. analysis and mitigation of crosstalk between classical and quantum links Analysis of various laser terminal concepts for application in the network node Investigation of methods for authenticating the quantum channel, e.g., using Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) Use and further development of a software simulator for network analysis Simulation of the performance of selected concepts Identification and optimization of suitable QKD post-processing algorithms Definition of a reference network and routing options (fiber, free-space) to derive requirements for the mobile network node Analysis of the impact of the atmosphere on system performance, e.g., due to background light or atmospheric turbulence Planning and setup of a free-space experiment to test selected aspects of quantum key distribution based on an existing QKD system, e.g., to investigate the effects of background light and crosstalk in the channel.
