Junior Group Leader / Post-Doctoral Researcher
Computational Linguistics/Cognitive Science

The position will be filled for a period of four years. Payment is at 100% of full time E14.
The position is part of the project "Understanding of, and Explanations with, Large Language Models", which is funded by the Volkswagen Stiftung and associated with the Cluster of Excellence "Machine Learning: New Perspectives for Science" at the University of Tübingen.The successful candidate will support the project with research on modern language technology, such as large language models, from a theoretical and empirical cognitive science point of view (e.g., mechanistic interpretability, neuro-symbolic systems, human-machine comparison).
The project entails co-supervision of PhD candidates and is intended as a steppingstone towards independence in academic research.
Requirements for employment are a completed PhD in a relevant field (Computational Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Linguistics, Machine Learning, or similar), near-native level of spoken and written English, and the ability to conduct independent scientific research in an area relevant to this project (Computational Linguistics, Linguistics, Machine Learning, Cognitive Science), documented by publications in leading venues.The position requires a solid mathematical background and experience with Deep Learning libraries (e.g., PyTorch), as well as familiarity with Linguistics and/or Cognitive Science. Experience in supervising students (e.g., at undergraduate level) is welcome.
