apartmentDeutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) placeStuttgart calendar_month
Non-scientific activities Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure.

Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place! For our Institute of Structures and Design in Stuttgart we are looking for a Engineer in Aerospace engineering, Materials engineering, Mechanical Engineering and related engineering fields (f/m/x) Structural design and analysis of advanced and 3D printed structures for satellite applications What to expect: The research of the ‘Structures for Satellites and Exploration’ group can be divided into two main application areas: Structures for satellites and structures for exploration missions.

Whereas the area of satellites requires flexible and integrated design platforms, design methods with integrated AI and cost-effective production methods as well as concepts for sustainability in mission and material selection as early as the design stage, exploration missions tend to focus on ‘enabling’ technologies.
Your position is established to promote the scientific knowledge gain in the field of demisable satellite structures for a sustainable use of our space infrastructure. Your tasks will include: Design of demisable elements of satellite platforms, such as demisable plates, joints, mounts, etc Simulations of satellite structures for launch, re-entry and experiment conditions.
Selection, customization and development of add-on modules of simulation tools to simulate the effects of launch loads on the designed parts with reference satellites by FEM simulations, Simulation of the destructive effects of re-entry on the reference satellites and components for given re-entry trajectories using dedicated engineering tools.
Numerical modelling and rebuilding of conducted experiments with simulation tools chosen by the group leader. The experiments considered vary from mechanical and thermal tests to plasma wind tunnel experiments. Monitoring the production of the required samples and prototypes in a variety of production tools as required.
Priority is given to 3D printing techniques, but other techniques are also considered. Evaluation of the test results. Publication of results in coordination with the group management through presentations at national and international conferences and through publications in internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journals.
Depending on the results, preparation of patent application documents What we expect from you: Completed scientific university degree (Master / Diploma Uni) in engineering (e.g. from the fields of materials science, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering) or other degree programmes relevant to the position.
Expertise in the field of atmospheric entry phenomena and re-entry technology Research experience working in a laboratory environment with basic manufacturing techniques and the use of laboratory equipment Knowledge and experience in using design and simulation softwares, e.g. Siemens NX, ANSYS. Previous experience in design-for-demise technologies is advantageous.
Your motivation to pursue a PhD in parallel in the same topic of your tasks. What we offer: DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally.
To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
