The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer - Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena conducts applied research in the field of photonics and develops innovative optical systems to control light - from its generation and manipulation to its application.

The services offered by the institute cover the entire photonic process chain ranging from opto-mechanical and opto-electronical system design to the manufacturing of customer-specific solutions and prototypes.

For our »Laser and Fiber Technology« department, we are looking for a research assistant to work on challenging theoretical and experimental research topics in the field of fiber technology.

What you will do

Your area of responsibility focuses on the development and implementation of high-precision optical measurement methods for the characterization of special glass fibers developed in-house.

A focus of your work is on carrying out and evaluating functional tests in systems such as testing of laser-actively doped fibers in fiber amplifier systems. You will be responsible for developing new measurement approaches that make it possible to record and evaluate previously difficult-to-access parameters and performance characteristics according to customer requirements.

In an interdisciplinary team of experts from the fields of technology, engineering, physics, materials science and chemistry, you will achieve new world records and innovative ideas. By documenting and presenting the research results in journals and at international conferences, you secure yourself, fiber technology and the IOF a recognized place in the international community.

Applicants who are interested in a doctorate are very welcome.

What you bring to the table
  • Completed studies (Dipl.-Phys./ Dipl.-Ing./ M. Sc.) in physics or a related field
  • Theoretical and practical experience optical measurement technology, optics, fiber technology and laser physics
  • Knowledge of glass fibers and fiber lasers, including their handling and preparation, is advantageous
  • Excellent English and German skills
  • Independent work style, commitment, as well as analytical and conceptual skills
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills
  • Enthusiasm for applied research and new ideas in fiber technology
What you can expect
  • Personal and professional development in challenging, applied R&D projects
  • Opportunity to actively shape and accentuate your own research focus
  • Networking with top-tier industrial partners
  • Participation in conferences, trade fairs and seminars to network within the international optics, fiber and laser community
  • Well-equipped laboratories
  • Work in a flexible team where communication at eye level, respect, and recognition are highly valued
